for some new artists soon!

APRIL
2005 |
April,
2005: Matt sold out 2 shows in his first ticket/jazz club show at
Fiddleheads in Huntington, NY. Sponsored by CD101.9 and Competition
BMW, the show was a huge success. 150 people filled the
club where Matt received 2 encores and the Long
Island crowd was thrilled to see a fellow Islander on the move
in the jazz world. Matt is also finishing touches
on some new tracks and ideas. A possible new album and
promo dvd due out this summer! |
FEBRUARY
2005 |
| Matt is back in the
studio working on some fresh exciting tracks. The recording has been
taking place at Billy Hellers studio, Tim Regusis' studio, and at
Matt's new studio. Funky Jazz and the new Chill styles are all being
woven together. Nearly finished is an upbeat funky number entilted
"summerfunk." Featuring former Tower of Power horn section
David Mann and Barry Danielian. Tim Regusis is also producing a track
entitled
"wind chill factor." This tune has a euro chill styling and
NY jazz blend. |
JANUARY 2005 |
| Matt's tune "Seduction" off
This Time Around will be debut on CD101.9 NY Chill January 22nd sometime
between 8pm-8:15. Rafe Gomez of The Groove Boutique www.grooveboutique.com
has chosen to give it some airplay. Thanks Rafe! |
DECEMBER 2004 |
| Matt was joined by
contemporary jazz legend Jason Miles for a special
"jazzed about music" show in NJ. www.jasonmilesmusic.com |
NOVEMBER
2004 |
| Matt can be heard
playing some rock guitar on a national tv jingle for Arrow Staples. |
AUGUAT 2004 |
| Matt joined Peter
White and Jaared for the 3rd Annual Jazz at Sunset concert to benefit
Multiple Sclerosis. Event planners Nancy Douglas and Kathy Spanos
did an amazing job. Matt was asked to open the show for Peter and
Jaared.
Matt had the opportunity to play a set of his new material and also
sit in with Peter and Jaared on Smooth Jazz hits such as Promenade,
Dreamwalk. Jaared also gave us a beautiful version of God Bless America.
It was a great event all around! See Pictures in the sights section.
Matt will begin work on new material this fall. The new material is
up-tempo pop/funk/melody driven material. Bill Heller of the
Rippingtons is rumored to have a possible hand in the production? |
APRIL 2004 |
|
Today Matt was doing some spring cleaning.
He flipped on the radio and there was Deborah
Rath from CD101.9 announcing that coming up they would be playing
a track by 'their discovery' Matt Marshak. Of course Matt ran to
the phone and called me.
We sat there on the phone in
silence listening patiently through an abundance of commercials.
Deborah came back and played "New Kid" off of This
Time Around. Matt and I hooted and hollered for a
few minutes and I think I might have even done a little happy
dance.
Radio is tough. We're getting played in a few markets as well as
on several internet stations. But of the major stations out there,
many just don't play unsigned / local talent.
CD101.9 didn't just run a contest and forget about us. They
are still supporting their "Best New Artist" and you
just don't always see that type of thing from big stations.
If you are in the listening area or
know someone who is. Check out CD101.9 they're
playing tons of great music: from old favorites to current hits
and of course... Matt!
- Jenn |
FEBRUARY 2004 |
| Matt recently played
on 2 tracks for Flautist Dwayne Kerr. Dwayne's the flautist for the
Erikah Badu group. The songs were seriously funky.
Hubert Eaves is on bass, Jeff Feinstein on keys, and Tony Allen on
drums.
Matt was real excited to have been a part of the tracks. Thanks Dwayne!
Matt's new record This Time Around is expected for March....Stay Tuned...
Matt is co-writing a blues album with artist Lucy Bonilla. It
is nearing completion and they will hit some of the summer's major
blues events and festivals. Matt takes a step away from the smooth
side and shows his love of the blues:strat and tele city, the hollowbody
guitars stay at home for these gigs.
Matt is doing a benefit concert April 18,2004 fro Multiple Sclerosis.
Matt is big on giving back to the community, and you can come out to
Jones Beach for a walk for MS. Other smooth jazz performers will
take the stage too. - Jenn |
OCTOBER 2003 |
| My album This
Time Around is basically finished. We
are selecting the song order, tweaking some mixes, mastering. Look
forward to a Holiday time CD release party....
Lucy Bonilla has been in the studio. Lucy is an incredible blues/rock/r&b
singer from Brooklyn. I've co-written several funky blues tunes
with Lucy including "prayer is her song, " which has some
gospely changes, along with "good thang, " which is reminiscent
of the Gadd Gang vibe. The Sessions have included Paul
Ossola on bass, Chris Marshak on drums, Robert Meeks on keys, and I've
had a great time laying down the guitars. Strat-city!
Leslie Mendelson is getting ready to record. She has informed me she'll
be recording a few songs we wrote together. She is a great up and coming
singer/songwriter from NY. I look forward to hearing them. Look
for
"Emilina," and "Sandcastles." - Matt |
JULY 2003 |
|
Well the results are in...
Matt has been
named Best New Artist in the CD101.9 Smooth
Jazz/Absolut Vodka new artist search!!!
The showcase
was phenomenal. Matt backed by his brother Chris
Marshak on drums, Dwayne
Kerr on flute, Kenny Harris on bass, and Chris Geith on keys,
put on a flawless show and had the crowd grooving all night.
The competition was tight. David
Stellmach, the other finalist showcased on Wednesday, was an
amazing performer and also had a great show. David is someone
you should definitely give a listen to.
Big thanks to
everyone who came out in support!
- Jenn |
JUNE 2003 |
| Matt's showcase date has been
moved to July 9th. |
MAY 2003 |
| Matt has
been nominated as a finalist in the CD101.9 smooth jazz/absolute
vodka new artist search. Matt is scheduled to perform on June 25th
in the Absolut New Artist Showcase at Metronome
Restaurant & Lounge.
Congratulations
Matt!
Also recording
for This Time Around is almost complete. Recent sessions
have included Danny Sadownic, Carl Burnett, Anastasia Rene, Dwayne
Kerr, Dean Kraus among many others. Look for a release date to
be announced soon.
And on the performance front, on May 2nd Matt was joined by Tim
Regusis and Joe Bonadio for a funky, experimental night of music
at Fiddleheads in Oyster Bay, NY. Thanks to Eileen and Mike for running such
a unique, refined, musical oasis. Look for this trio again
soon!

DECEMBER 2002 |
| I've recently added
a 1981 Ibanez Artist semi hollow body with 10 gauge strings, and
a brand new Gibson 135 semi hollow body with 12 gauge strings to
the arsenal. The added size of these guitars has
really helped
"fatten" up things tone-wise.
Other added gear: MXR stereo chorus, The POD (which I'm using on my
new record in combination with my Fulltone Fat Boost), Alesis Microverb. I
also got rid of my Gibson double cutaway to make some room.
I recently picked up George Duke's latest release along with Lee Ritenour's
latest release. What I admire about both is the "lack of concern"
with the smooth jazz format. They both have their token smooth track,
but both also explore all other styles and sounds. On Duke's you'll
hear funky tracks, South African inspired rhythms, and peaceful feeling
piano too.
Ritenour goes from a misty smooth track to a Hammond filled Jimmy
Smith type thang. Outstanding. Variety is so rare these days. Good
for these guys!
I'm also proud to announce my new manager Jenn Phillips. She
can be reached through www.kemistre.com for
all inquiries. We are planning a grass roots/independent game plan
for my next release. Look out! - matt |
NOVEMBER 2002 |
|
Matt has headed back into the studio and is working on a new CD due
out next year.
While he still
has his smooth recognizable sound, his playing has definitely
evolved. Playing live for the last year with a variety of hugely
talented up and coming artists as well as seasoned veterans has
given him the opportunity expand his sound, not to mention pick
up a trick or two.
On his sophomore
release (which as of now, is untitled) Matt delves into the funkier
side of smooth. While the new album still features his trademark
soon-to-be-classic sound, there are now several selections with
beats to get your blood pumping, fingers tapping and your feet contemplating
the dance floor.

SEPTEMBER 2002 |
| Matt put the finishing
touches on his version of Eric Clapton's
"Wonderful Tonight" and while not commercially available,
he is performing it locally to fantastic audience response. - Jenn |
JULY 2002 |
| I'll be heading into
the studio real soon with David Mann to work on a cover tune. This is my first time remaking an old tune. We're
hoping it can help us raise some eyebrows.
We've discovered the Mixed
Notes Cafe in Elmont, NY. Its an incredibly warm, receptive, culturally
diverse establishment that embraced us whole heartedly in our debut
performance. Tony and the gang are super people. We look forward
to playing there for some time.
We had a great show at 17Main in
Mount Kisco, NY. Very exciting crowd. Carl Burnett sat in and
did a killer tremelo filled version of Bill Wither's "Ain't No
Sunshine". Thanks Carl! Dave Anderson held down the bass duties,
and even took a crowd pleasing solo over our African Influenced "Tune
in A" - matt |
APRIL 21, 2OO2 |
|
I had an outrageous gig with the Gumbo band down
at Penang. David
Mann, Ron Jenkins, Tim Regusis, Chris Marshak, Leslie Mendelson
were all a part of the night. We were thrilled as Nelson Rangell
stopped by and sat in. Guitar great Jeff Golub (jeffgolub.com)
was hanging too.
Check out Jeff's new record as he remakes some of the great
tunes of the soul era. - matt |
APRIL 5, 2002 |
| I'm happy to announce
the completion of 2 new tunes. One entitled "new
kid in town," is a David Sanbornish Funky number that features
Tim Regusis, Bakithi Kumalo, Fred Walcott, Mario Cruz, Chris Marshak.
The other is a Smooth Groove called "seduction," which features
David Mann, Tanya Michelle.

JANUARY 2002 |
Happy
New Year....All is well! I had the pleasure of sitting in on guitar
at the Marion Meadows Christmas show up in New Haven. It
was a great time. Marion's style is elegant, funky, and
so pleasing to the ears.
Guitarist Rohn Lawrence played most the night, and was on fire!
I had an incredible gig at Kave Haz, NYC Jan.17. David Mann,
Joe Bonadio, Steve Gaboury, and Paul Ossola joined me...great time. I've
been recording every gig lately, and am considering doing a "live
in NY" CD with cuts from different nights..
- matt |
|
I'm
currently working on a new tune given to me by west coast native
Carl Burnett. Carl is an amazing guitarist and writer whose
credits included Robben Ford, Boney James, Branford Marsalis. Most
recently he wrote 2 songs (including the title track) on the
new Larry Carlton "Deep Into It" album!! Hopefully
his magic can work with me too! He is now kickin' it
here in NYC. Check him out at www.carlburnett.com.
Oh yeah, to anybody looking for artist development, guidance,
promotional advice/wisdom should check out Jenn Phillips
at www.Kemistre.com or
for design work, check out her graphic art business at www.imageseverything.com,
Jenn is the master of album cover design, webpages, brochures,
serious flyers, or any other promotional materials an artist
may need.

Hey
everyone! It's November already. It seems like yesterday we were
all complaining of the heat and humidity of August...oh well!
I've been busy out of my mind lately… which is good. After
a successful cd release party in July, some great gigs through
the summer, and a fabulous showcase at Kave Haz, NYC on Oct.25...I'm
ready for the fall and winter.
I'm
proud to announce the start of a relationship with Air Tight
Management. They
are known for handling the super jazz group Fourplay, among
other talented artists and groups. Under their leadership,
I feel confident in the future and the direction I'm heading
in.
I
also had the pleasure of meeting and performing with singer/artist
Cassandra Reed. She sat in at our Kave Haz show, and stunned the crowd with
her soulful, sexy voice. I
look forward to working with her in the future. Look out for
her!
Jack
Licitra, a great songwriter from NY has just released a new album
entitled
"Griot." I had the pleasure of co-writing a song, and playing
guitar on the record. Great pop, world, roots record.
